A review of the census records for his father Amos Slawson in the years 1800 and 1810 makes it easy to see why this conclusion was drawn. The 1800 census shows two males under the age of 10. The 1810 census only shows 1 male, other than Amos. Since we have multiple records for the son named Eli, it was concluded that Nathaniel must have passed away before the 1810 census. This was not the case. Nathaniel survived well past both his father Amos and his brother Eli. This census anamoly is explained fairly simply. The one male that left the household was the older brother Eli. He would have been 15, and perhaps he was on loan to neighbor families to help on the farms. This was a common occurence during the early 1800's.

In fact, Nathaniel is mentioned in Amos' will written in 1825. Nathaniel is also mentioned in the documents related to the proving of the same will in 1830. Obviously the authors of the official Slawson book did not investigate the probate records of Amos. They probably did use census records, and Nathaniel Slawson can not be found in the years 1820 thru 1840. The explanation for this is that Nathan was living with both his parents 1820, and with his mother in 1830 and 1840. There is an entry for an older male adult living with Susannah Slawson in both the 1830 and 1840 census. These are actually the entries for Nathaniel Slawson. This explains his "disapperance" from the census records, and the incorrect conclusion that he passed away before 1810.

In 1850 Nathaniel Slawson, age 53, suddenly appears in the census for Pound Ridge, living with his brother Eli. His mother Susannah, moved to Steuben County in approx. 1848, and Nathaniel stayed behind in Westchester county to live with his brother.

Unfortunately, no burial record has been found for Nathaniel Slawson. He can be found in the 1860 and 1870 census' living with Nehemiah Slawson, still in Pound Ridge. It is presumed that Nathaniel passed before the 1880 census, as he is no longer shown as living with Nehemiah, nor any where else in New York state.
